The New Zealand Mountain Safety Council (MSC) is a national organisation who has been working for more than 50 years with a mandate to encourage safe participation in land-based outdoor activities.

The MSC does this through the development and promotion of safety messaging, by identifying and responding to insights provided by the ongoing collection and analysis of data, and by building partnerships with relevant organisations.

The New Zealand Avalanche Advisory is provided by MSC as a tool which offers daily information of current snowpack and avalanche conditions at 12 regions throughout New Zealand. The information gathered from avalanche professionals give a primary, secondary and tertiary avalanche dangers, what aspects and elevations you can expect to encounter these dangers along with information on recent avalanche activity, current snowpack conditions and mountain weather forecasts. Advisories are issued every 24 to 48 hours so it’s important to check read advisories every time you go out.

Understanding the primary and secondary dangers of the forecast will help you to choose your route more effectively. However, heading into the backcountry without the basic equipment – shovel, transceiver and probe – dramatically reduces your ability to stay safe. It's vital that you have this equipment and the training to use this correctly.

In a time of need you don't want to be second guessing anything. Seconds count, and it could be you or your mates that are in need. Head to their website for more information about what equipment you need, and where to get the training.
